Education Information for Full-Time National Guard

Current Education Info for Active Guard and Reserve (AGR), Active Duty Operational Support (ADOS) and Military Technology (Mil Tech)

If you're serving full time in the National Guard, the following changes and benefits will apply to you upon the start of full-time Guard Duty. Your benefits vary depending on the type of orders.

Active Guard Reserve (AGR) Title 10 or Title 32

Benefits:

  • Upon the start date of your AGR status, you may make election to receive benefits under MGIB-AD Chapter 30 (once your eligibility is confirmed and as long as you haven’t declined this program in the past). There is a required $1,200 payment (either as a lump sum or a monthly payment of $100 for 12 months) with this program. Your state Education Services Officer (ESO) can answer your questions about making an election.
  • You are eligible for the **Plus Up*** contribution while on Active Duty, which will add an additional $150 to your MGIB-AD Chapter 30 basic GI Bill benefit per month of school attendance.
  • You are eligible for the **Buy-Up*** contribution, which supplements your Chapter 1607, while in the Selected Reserve, ING or IRR (similar to MGIB-AD Chapter 30).
  • You can use Post-9/11 Chapter 33, but you and your spouse are not eligible to receive the housing stipend or Yellow Ribbon while you are in a qualifying Active Duty status. You are eligible for the housing stipend and possibly Yellow Ribbon (pending school participation) while in a Title 32 ADOS or Traditional drilling status. The housing stipend is available if a child or children are using the benefit, as they will always be considered non-Active Duty.

Changes:

  • If you are eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR, Chapter 1606) and (possibly) the ARNG GI Bill Kicker, both will be placed into a suspended status effective the start date of AGR Status.
  • You can use MGIB-AD Chapter 30 as a Top Up* only while on AGR. It can be used in conjunction with Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA) but cannot exceed the cost of the course.
  • A combination of REAP Chapter 1607 and FTA is not authorized to pay for the same course while in an AGR or mobilized status.
  • Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP) and bonuses may also be affected. Contact your respective state Education Services Officer (ESO) or Incentives Office for more details.
  • State Tuition Assistance benefit(s), if eligible, may also be affected (pending state restrictions).
  • Should you return to a traditional M-Day status before completing your original six-year obligation, prior to entering an AGR status you must extend for the period of time spent as AGR, to equal your six-year obligation if you wish to regain Chapter 1606 and Kicker eligibility.
  • You are allowed to exceed 100 percent of tuition cost if using Chapter 30 and FTA for the same course once you return to a traditional M-Day status.

*Ask your state Education Services Officer (ESO) about Plus Up, Top Up, Buy Up, and any additional incentives and benefits.

  • While serving under Title 10 ADOS orders, you are eligible for Post-9/11 GI Bill Chapter 33 (you must reach an aggregate of 90 days or more of qualifying time).

  • Title 32 ADOS does not qualify for Post-9/11 GI Bill Chapter 33, MGIB-AD Chapter 30 or REAP Chapter 1607.

  • If you are eligible for MGIB-SR Chapter 1606, you may use it while in this status but your ARNG GI Bill Kicker will be placed into a suspended status effective the 180th day of Miltech status.
